Protesters in front of the State Capitol in Columbia, SC. About 40 people gathered to the Trump acquittal.
A rally to protest the impeachment acquittal of President Donald Trump was held in front of the SC State Capitol Wednesday. Protesters of all ages started gathering around 5:00 Wednesday evening and promised to be there until 7:00pm.
Marta Bliese with the organization Invisible Midlands was the event organizer. Bliese said that Columbia was “pinned” on social media as a location where a rally would be held in SC to protest the acquittal. Bliese said Invisible Midlands “spread their message among supporters through Twitter and Facebook.”
The rally was part of a larger national movement to protest the Trump acquittal in all 50 states. A group named Resistance Coalition called on activists across the country to “take to the streets” under the leading of another group named “Reject the Coverup” at 5:30 on Wednesday on their Twitter feed.
Two protest rallies were held in SC, one in Columbia, the other in Charleston, with hundreds of others across the country in most major cities. The heaviest concentration of protests were held in and around Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Placards and banners calling for removal of Trump, US Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott were visible at the protest. A huge banner with the statement “Reject the Coverup” was held by protesters on Gervais Street in front of the State Capitol building.
On the Resistance Coalition Twitter site, one commenter, Susan Smith, stated “Why not storm the capital (sic) bldg at 2 or 4 before they do their dirty deed and let Trump off.” Another commenter called for the removal of as many Republicans as possible.
Approximately 40 people showed up to let their voice be heard to passers by. Car horns in support of the protesters, and others yelling disapproval out of them from their car windows, were heard as the group chanted “no more Trump”.
The legislature had already adjourned for the day when the protest rally began. The Standard was able to reach House Representative Stewart Jones from District 14 in Laurens by phone to get his take on the rally and the Trump acquittal.
Jones remarked that “the continued attacks on President Trump are pure ignorance. At a time when minorities and women are doing better than ever, it would be great if some could appreciate the great things that President Trump has done.”
