The Lexington County Republican Party (LCRP) censured District 23 Sen. Katrina Shealy during their normally scheduled monthly executive committee meeting Monday, June 5th. Executive Committeeman Will Allen made a motion to censure the Lexington Senator after she had made two very public refutations of the State Republican platform by voting for abortion rights over the past six weeks. One of those votes involved a filibuster stance.
County Chairwoman Pamela Godwin stated “the LCRP members presented a wide body of evidence and voted to censure Sen. Shealy.” She added “being pro-life is a bare minimum expectation for Republican legislators in Lexington County and Sen. Shealy has unfortunately failed that test very outwardly.”
Several Executive Committeemen stepped forward to present public documents that verified Allen’s motion. When a call for the vote was asked, the vote was overwhelming. Only two votes out of 51 were against censure of the Senator.
The meeting also heard from 3rd Vice Chair John Allen who presented detailed information concerning a 93 acre land and convention center complex development proposed by Lexington Mayor Steve MacDougall.
All legislative seats in South Carolina are up for election in 2024 with the Republican Primary taking place in June of 2024.
