The State Capitol in Columbia, was the rallying point for the ‘Defend Our Freedom’ day sponsored by TURN Local. Between 700-1,000 people showed up in a mix of concerned citizens who met on the Statehouse grounds and many circling the Capitol in their cars and trucks. They gathered to speak to the governor in an open and vocal way. There were hundreds riding around the state Capitol in their cars blowing their horns in support of the get back to work campaign headed up by Hilton Head Attorney Lauren Martel.
Political candidates were on hand including Republican primary candidate Dwayne “Duke” Buckner, who is running for United States Senator against current U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham. Buckner took a few moments to speak with us during the gathering about why he was there.
Buckner emphasized that he believes in the right to ‘Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness’ a tenet we find in the Declaration of Independence. The candidate said he thinks those “Constitutional rights are being trampled on” at this time due to government overreach during the Coronavirus panic.
He said “it’s time we turned the page as a community and as a people to bring life back into our communities.” Buckner emphasized that we need to open up the state as soon as possible, he said “statistics are showing that suicides are up, depression is up, domestic violence is up, and folks can’t just stay in their homes indefinitely.”
The Senatorial candidate said that “there’s got to be some hope, some sunshine at the end of the tunnel.” He repeated that we must “open up” the state and country so people can get back to work.
SC will hold a primary election on June 9th in every county.
