Sheriff re-elected easily, Jones coasts in Council District Five
Community advocate Charli Wessinger rode a huge turnout from the Chapin area of the district to erase a deficit in absentee voting and cruise to a victory in the Republican Primary in Lexington County Council District Six. Wessinger captured 57% of the vote to former Councilman Johnny Jeffcoat’s 43%.
Jeffcoat held his own in the Irmo and Lexington parts of the district but the turnout numbers did not match that of the well-organized Chapin community. Not only was there a large turnout in Chapin, but Wessinger’s margins were massive, having won from 66 to 76 percent in all of the polling locations.
Wessinger is all but assured to take office as there is no Democrat opponent in the heavily Republican district.
The county’s other competitive council race was to fill the seat being vacated by the retirement of Bobby “Gravedigger” Keisler. Gene “Bimbo” Jones easily won over Joel Tyson. Jones won every precinct in the district that includes Boiling Springs, Edmund, Red Bank and South Congaree.
The final margin was 61% for Jones and 39% for Tyson. Jones also faces no opposition in the November general election.
Sheriff Jay Koon earned his second full term after dispatching David Arnold by a margin of 70% to 30%. Koon carried all but one of the county’s precincts, proving his continued popularity even while facing a strong challenge from Arnold.
