House Speaker Nancy Pelosi upset about Congress members refusing to submit to “unconstitutional” screenings prior to entering House chambers.

In January Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi led the charge to impose a $5000 fine for any Member of Congress who avoided or walked around the metal detectors she had installed January 7th. House Rule 73 requires that all members enter through the metal detectors that were installed or pay a fine. The House Rule says that a second offense would be $10,000 with the fines deducted directly from their Congressional salary.

Several Republican Congressmen witnessed Speaker Pelosi ‘skate around’ the barrier last week avoiding metal detectors. The Congressmen are crying ‘hypocrisy’ and have asked the Sergeant-at-Arms to follow the rules and assess a fine on Speaker Pelosi.

Republicans on the House Administration Committee sent a letter Feb 5th to the Acting Sergeant-at-Arms saying “Yesterday, at approximately 9:59am, multiple members observed the Speaker of the House entering the House Chamber without completing security screening…”

Illinois Congressman Rodney Davis

Illinois Congressman Rodney Davis was among those who witnessed the Speaker and has been speaking out about the hypocrisy that has engulfed the House and nation since the swearing in of the new Congress and President Biden. Davis said on Fox News that “it was disappointing, but not surprising that she would implement rules that she has no intent on following. Just like during the beginning of the pandemic she told everybody else to not get a haircut, but she decided to go and get one in San Francisco.”

The February 5th Republican letter continued saying “What was observed was a clear violation of House Resolution 73 and you are required by House Rules to impose this fine. Please inform us once this fine has been assessed.”

Congressman Davis continued that “after January 6th the Speaker decided to install metal detectors in the Capitol when there has been no internal threat whatsoever within the Capitol.” He added that any threat is “outside the Capitol along the perimeter…”

The evening of January 6th the nation’s Capitol began shutting down and barricading the Capitol. By January 12th much of the city was under total containment by DC police, Capitol police and US National Guard troops from around the nation. This writer was witness to the arrival of semi-trucks and trailers hauling in concrete and portable fencing barriers to Washington, DC and US Capitol as well as busses bringing in police and troops. Others have also been witness including the popular YouTube videographer “MustangMedic” who has had many live sessions on the Capitol grounds and activities taking place at the US Capitol.

Davis said that Pelosi then “doubled down” on the metal detector security and “imposed a $5000 fine for anybody who goes around the security screening.” He said that included a Republican colleague who had been “fined $5000 for doing exactly what I personally witnessed Speaker Pelosi doing by walking into the Speakers lobby and directly onto the House floor just the other morning.”

House screening for members of Congress.

Several House members have been issued fines since Pelosi breached the House security system. Reps. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) and Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) were each fined $5,000 the same week for refusing to go through a metal detector before entering the House chamber. This following Nancy Pelosi ‘skirting around’ the metal detectors just two days prior.

Republican lawmakers have balked at the idea of the metal detectors. Rep. Greg Steube, R-Florida said the metal detectors are an “appalling” infringement on his rights, Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) said they’re “unnecessary, unconstitutional, and endanger members.” Newly elected Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) has refused Capitol police requests to check her purse stating that she is a member of Congress and did not surrender her rights.

Representative Boebert is one of many House lawmakers who is vocal about carrying a firearm. She has argued that she is legally entitled to do so in the Capitol complex and does not want to leave her life at risk if an incident arises. Another freshman lawmaker, Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R-N.C.), said he was armed when the riot took place.

The entire argument brings up the Luby’s Restaurant shooting 30 years ago in October this year, when Luby’s patrons had to leave their firearms in their cars to obey the law. A deadly episode followed where a man drove a truck through the front window of the restaurant and started shooting. He killed 24 patrons, many of whom had their firearm close by in their car or truck but unable to retrieve it due to being under attack.

The Illinois Congressman said that “if she had an excuse, I think she is going to try and get the people under her jurisdiction like the Sergeant-at-Arms, who was appointed directly by the Speaker, directly after his predecessor was fired on January 7th, to stall this.” Davis further said “They can stall this all they want, but we expect rules if they are going to be implemented to be implemented fairly. And when they’re not, it’s the good men and women of the Capitol police that are actually affected by this disproportionate implementation of the rules.”
