Frank E. Barron, III
Former Richland County Coroner, Frank E. Barron, III, will be presented The Order of The Palmetto by Governor Henry McMaster on Wednesday, October 23rd at 11:00am in the governor’s office. The Order of the Palmetto is the highest civilian honor awarded by the governor.
He was nominated for the prestigious award by real estate investor Charles J. Brooks, Congressman Joe Wilson, State Rep. Kirkman Finlay and Forensic Pathologist Joel Sexton, MD.
Barron has the distinction of serving as Coroner of Richland County for 22 years. Barron’s list of accomplishments include being a co-founder of South Carolina Citizens for Life, was part of the founding of Lexington/Richland Drug and Alcohol Abuse Commission (LRADAC), served on the Committee for Crime, Delinquency and Criminal Justice under several governors and on the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention board of directors for several years.
“I can’t take all the credit,” he said. “A lot of the things I did I just put the leadership there. I didn’t do all the work 
but came up with the idea.” Barron said “I had a lot of good people helping me.”
SC Coroner’s elected him multiple times to serve as President of the SC Coroners’ Association where he used his expertise to work with the legislature in enacting stronger DUI laws, child restraint and seatbelt laws. Barron recently completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice at The Citadel 53 years after originally majoring in biology at The Citadel in the class of 1966.
The Order of the Palmetto was created by Governor John West in 1971 to recognize lifetime achievement and service. It was modeled on similar honors bestowed in other states, such as the Kentucky Colonel and the Arkansas Traveler Award. The presentation is made in the form of a framed plaque. Barron concluded that “by serving God’s people, I serve him best.”
