Partisan political party meetings are usually a place where partisans wrangle with ideas, legislation, ideology and other non-public matters, but not always. Sometimes these partisan meetings speak very loudly of situations that spill over into the public for violation of their values and decorum.
That appears to be the case in the March meeting of the Lexington County Republican Party when the consensus of the Executive Committee voted to censure West Columbia Councilman Mike Green due to unbecoming behavior of “taunting, harassing, and yelling at other[s]” member or members. The resolution stated that this was occurring even “after Chairman Craig Caldwell warned him to stop”.
Near the end of the March meeting agenda two resolutions were brought forward and voted on by the body.
The first resolution read as follows:
WHEREAS West Columbia City Councilman Mike Green has been taunting, harassing, and yelling at others in the Lexington County Republican Party meetings; and
WHEREAS Chairman Craig Caldwell has already warned Mike Green to stop harassing others at county party meetings; and
WHEREAS West Columbia City Councilman Mike Green continued his behavior after Chairman Craig Caldwell warned him to stop; and
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Mike Green be censured.
This resolution passed by a 24 to 16 roll call vote.
The second resolution was then read and voted upon by the Lexington County Republican Party Executive Committee:
WHEREAS West Columbia City Councilman Mike Green has voted for mask mandates; and
WHEREAS West Columbia City Councilman Mike Green has promoted covid vaccines for children as young as five years old; and
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Mike Green be censured.
This second resolution was voted on by a roll call vote and passed with a vote of 19 to 15 in favor of censure. Although the second vote did not garner as many people voting due to the lateness of the hour, the two votes represented over half of the Lexington County Republican Party Executive Committee.
Following the votes taken to censure, Green asked Caldwell if he could address the Committee. Permission was granted and Green read from the scriptures at 1 Corinthians 13:1-13. Following Green’s address the meeting was dismissed upon adjournment to reconvene April 4th at 7:00pm.
