I just had the opportunity to speak with Hunter Thomas, sports information director with Florence-Darlington Technical College. Hunter said the Stingers are scheduled to play their first home games at their brand new ballfields, located on the Florence Darlington campus next week, weather permitting.
This is a momentous occasion and will mark the first time in the college’s history where ball games will be held on campus. There will not be a ceremony before these particular games, but an official dedication of the fields will be held in March.
Head Baseball Coach Preston McDonald has done a marvelous job in developing his players since he arrived in the 2010 season. He has won over 350 games for the Stingers in the past 10 years with a winning percentage of .625. He looks to improve that this year.
Last year right-handed pitcher Elian Almanzar was selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 22nd round of the 2019 MLB Draft. In the 26.2 innings the freshman pitched, Almanzar won four games and struck out 30 batters. He averaged 10.13 strikeouts a game, and he didn’t give up a homerun all season long. Almanzar only allowed 28 hits, 21 runs, 14 earned runs and 26 walks.
