The Standard political writer Preston Baines adds important choices for the June 9th Republican Primary.

SC State Senate District 26 (Cayce/West Columbia area, parts of Aiken, Calhoun and Saluda counties,) far left Senate Minority Leader and longtime Senator Nikki Setzler (D-West Columbia) faces re-election. Every four years, Setzler campaigns as a conservative in the Republican-favored district while his record is the opposite.

He will face the winner of the Republican Primary between Perry Finch and Chris Smith.

Chris Smith of West Columbia should get the support of primary voters. Smith, a pastor and real estate broker, is also head of the annual Capital City Day of Prayer. He is a down-the-line conservative who highlights his pro-life and pro-2nd Amendment stances. He is also the candidate who is making a true effort toward winning in November against Setzler.

Finch, preciously a two-time loser for state house, is a strong conservative himself but hasn’t given the effort needed win the primary or general election against a well-financed incumbent.

Chris Smith is the conservative with the best chance to flip this seat in the November general election.
