Over 62,500,000 unborn babies have suffered death by abortion since 1973. The “Heartbeat Bill” is waiting.
The South Carolina state senate has passed the long sought-after “Heartbeat Bill” by a 30-13 vote. By the time you see this writing, the legislation may have already been passed in the house and signed by the governor to become law.
The legislation makes it illegal to have an abortion after a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is estimated at six weeks gestation. Despite a new 30-16 majority in the senate, exceptions had to be added to the bill for it to gain the votes of Republican Sens. Tom Davis of Beaufort, Hugh Leatherman of Florence and Luke Rankin of Myrtle Beach. Those exceptions are in the case of fetal abnormality, incest and rape.
A term like fetal abnormality is very broad and concerning in the first place. Listen, I believe a human is a human and aborting it at any point after conception should be illegal. Heartbeat legislation is a controversy amongst the fervently pro-life side.
Many in the pro-life movement like myself support a clean ban on abortions but the difference with some is that I don’t only support a total ban and nothing else. While the heartbeat bill still allows for too many deaths to take place, we have to make the best improvements possible for life and realize that this is only a battle in the war.
Sen. Richard Cash (R – Easley) is the most dogged pro-life member of the senate. While he fights hard to have the cleanest, most pro-life legislation there is, he realizes that we must take this victory even if it isn’t the perfect victory.
Math is math and the votes just were not there to pass the strongest pro-life bills. Something I will always preach is that Republican Primaries are the most important elections you will face. The overwhelming majority of the time, they will decide who you are electing. Pay attention and elect people who are down-the-line conservative through your primaries.
What we must do is support the incremental Heartbeat Bill and begin immediately on the next step – even stronger, pro-life legislation for next year’s session that protects all life.
